We fight for the rights and opportunities of every Oklahoman.
In 2022, one of our inaugural projects was to produce a true crime advocacy podcast about the Oklahoma case of April Wilkens. On Season 2, debuting June 27th, 2023, we flip April's case around and ask: if women are getting such long sentences for fighting back, what are the men getting for committing the actual abuse?
When we told April's story last year on Season One of Panic Button, we got so many questions. Why didn't she leave? Why did she go back? Why did she fire the gun so many times?
We think its important to start to train our minds to stop asking what the victims of domestic violence should have done differently, and begin to ask why the perpetrators of harm and violence are not held to account in Oklahoma.
To explain that side of the story, we began researching the stories of over twelve survivors of violence who have one thing in common: they've all been abused by the same man. Jim Luman has committed heinous acts of domestic violence across three decades and across multiple states. Every time he gets caught he seems to wiggle free of accountability.
Is the criminal justice system really the place for these kinds of perpetrators? Are there better solutions to combatting family violence that are just beyond our reach because of our fixation on incarceration and punishment? Or are there some people who just need to go away behind bars for a very, very long time? We explore these questions and more as we tell the stories of these victims, and their attempts to seek justice from a system that prefers the path of least resistance, which often means allowing abusers to walk free.
Tune in every Tuesday at midnight starting June 27th, 2023, for the true crime podcast release of the Summer.
