We fight for the rights and opportunities of every Oklahoman.
We fight for the rights and opportunities of every Oklahoman.
Something we often hear is "there's so much work to do in Oklahoma." Yes, it's true, but for us that also means there's a lot of opportunity for partnership, collaboration, and continuous improvement. We worked with our Board of Directors and our Advisory Board to hone our focus in to the issues we know Oklahoma struggles with the most. Since we're a small (but mighty!) team, we must be laser focused on the issues that will make the most difference in the lives of the Oklahomans we serve. After a robust landscape analysis we focused in on three areas: Criminal & Juvenile Justice, Education Justice, and Election Justice.
Our team began OK Appleseed in 2022 with the belief that Oklahoma can become a more just and fair society. Since we launched we have uncovered truths about the system we couldn't have imagined, and worked to right decade old wrongs.
Public education is the bedrock of our democracy. If we don't have citizens that are educated enough participate in our democracy, then all is lost. The reality is that 15,6% of Oklahomans live below the poverty line. We have to ensure they have free, fair, reasonable access to good education.
Oklahomans have a comparatively low voter turnout, and many Oklahomans aren't sure if they're eligible to vote due to old felony convictions. We're launching a landscape analysis of election laws and working with advocates in the space to understand and bring the most value to working in elections and election law.
Our projects in election justice are coming soon!
